Don’t Let Your Child Skip Breakfast!

As parents we hear breakfast is an important meal, yet many kids aren’t eating it.

Research shows that kids who eat breakfast have:

  • Improved concentration
  • Better memory
  • Longer attention spans
  • Better grades

Unfortunately, studies also show that as kids grow older,  skipping breakfast gets worse. One survey in 2011 showed 33% of elementary age children report skipping breakfast. By the time they get to high school, the estimates are as high as 64% of students are skipping breakfast! This is really bad news because as academics get more difficult – requiring more focus, attention and memory – teens are putting themselves at a disadvantage by skipping breakfast.

Why do kids skip breakfast?

  • Mornings are rushed…they choose to sleep a little longer
  • “I’m not hungry”
  • Food insecurity
  • Long bus rides …can’t eat on the bus
  • Weight loss strategy…research shows this is false!

By insisting that your child eats breakfast, you’re setting them up for academic success!
